The monks cause a storm of resentment by launching an expedition to a Welsh village to recover the bones of St Winifred and return them to the abbey. As if that does not make them unpopular enough, a local landowner dies in mysterious circumstances and it is up to Brother Cadfael to clear his colleagues of murder and ensure they get out of the country alive.
